A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his mother after a woman's body parts were discovered scattered around an apartment in a horror-movie like scene.
Her corpse had been cut into several small pieces and was found in the city of Salon-de-Provence, south-east France, in the early hours of last Sunday.
Relatives of the 57-year-old victim, who has not been named in local media, had contacted the Fire Brigade when they became worried they had not heard from her.
They broke down the door when they arrived at her home, a second floor apartment in the La Roseraie residence on Alphonse Daudet avenue, and no one answered.
Police were called after the horrific scene was discovered at around 1.30 in the morning.
One of the victim's sons was in the dwelling at the time.
The 36-year-old, who has also not been named, was arrested immediately and taken into custody.
The prosecutor's office has indicated that the man is known to have a "psychiatric history".
Marseille department security service has opened an investigation and the circumstances of the death are yet to be determined.
