United States’ government led by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris has reportedly endorsed Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former minister of finance, for the office of director-general of World Trade Organisation (WTO).

According to AFP, the office of the US trade representative in a statement said the Biden-Harris admin is pleased to support the candidacy of Okonjo-Iweala, who is also a US citizen.

The Donald Trump-led administration had refused to back the former managing director of the World Bank.

Trump’s administration had said it favoured South Korean’s candidate, Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee over Okonjo-Iweala because WTO is in dire need of reform and must be “led by someone with real, hands-on experience in the field”.
