Federal High Court has on Tuesday ordered the remand of a fugitive leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu in the custody of Department of State Services (DSS) till July 26 for continuation of his trial.

Kanu, who was brought to the court amidst tight security, arrived at the court at about 1:40pm after being extradited back to Nigeria on Sunday since he fled in 2017.

However, all the entrance to the court was locked as the hearing proceeded on Tuesday.

Kanu is facing charges bordering on treasonable felony instituted against him at the court in response to years of campaign for IPOB.

He was granted bail in April 2017 for health reasons but skipped bail after flouting some of the conditions given to him by the court.

Attorney General of Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, who made the disclosure in a joint press briefing with the DSS and Police, said Kanu was arrested on Sunday, June 27.

However, the briefing was silent on where he was arrested.

He was subsequently arraigned before Binta Nyako, a Judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The remand order was sequel to an application by a federal government lawyer, Shuaibu labaran.

Ruling on the request for remand in the custody of the DSS, Justice Nyako, held that the prosecution should inform Kanu’s lawyer of his rearrest and remand in the custody of DSS.

The judge subsequently adjourned till July 26 for a continuation of trial.
