Nigerians have criticised Federal Government over its plan to pay 24.3 million low-income earners in the country N5,000 each for a period of six months (January to June).

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday flagged off cash transfer of N5,000 to low-income earners in urban areas, as part of efforts to ease the impact of COVID-19 on the economy.

Professor Osinbajo said the scheme called Rapid Response Register (RRR) is to be facilitated through a wholly technology-based approach

He expressed that;

The groundbreaking success of the RRR, now emboldens us to achieve our aspiration of a social security programme for a minimum of twenty million Nigerians in the next two years.

The target beneficiaries of the scheme are “self-employed”, “wage employed” and “urban poor.

On its part, ministry of humanitarian affairs, said in using “cutting-edge” technology, it had undertaken a pilot scheme where over 100,000 beneficiaries in Lagos and the federal capital territory (FCT) were captured.

The ministry’s boss, Sadiya Farouq, on Tuesday said the new intervention would serve as a cushion for those further impoverished by the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, many Nigerians have taken to social media to heavily criticise the government over its planned effort, saying it’s not a sustainable way to help the needy.

They added that such funds should be diverted into creating job opportunities for the millions of unemployed people and begin to operate a friendly economy for businesses to thrive.
