Britain’s Health Minister, Matt Hancock has on Saturday resigned after he breached social distancing guidelines by kissing
his senior adviser, Gina Coladangelo.
Hancock secretly appointed Coladangelo to Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) as an unpaid adviser on a six-month contract in March last year.
In September, he appointed Coladangelo, who is married millionaire mom, as a non-executive director at DHSC, meaning that she is a member of the board that scrutinises the department.
British newspaper ‘The Sun‘, known for its often explosive reveals, published photographs on its front page on Friday that showed Hancock kissing the woman.
The newspaper added that the photos, screengrabs from CCTV footage, were taken on May 6, that is, 11 days before COVID-19 lockdown rules were relaxed.
During this period, the restrictions in England still banned indoor social gatherings of people from different households.
People were urged to stay two meters apart and avoid “face-to-face contact” but those restrictions have since been relaxed.
Even though the case raised a huge public outcry in the country, demanding the health secretary’s resignation, UK prime minister Boris Johnson later accepted Hancock’s apology and said that the matter was now “closed“.
However, opposing Labour Party said the health secretary should be removed from office for violating social distancing rules and demanded an investigation into whether he breached the ministerial code.
Anneliese Dodds, Chair of the Labour Party said;
Matt Hancock appears to have been caught breaking the laws he created while having a secret relationship with an aide he appointed to a taxpayer-funded job.
Announcing his resignation via a video shared on his Twitter on Saturday, Hancock apologised for breaking social distancing rule but did not mention anything about cheating on his wife.
He said;
I accept that I breached the social distancing guidance in these circumstances. I have let people down and am very sorry. I understand the enormous sacrifices that everybody in this county has made — that you have made. Those of us who make these rules have got to stick by them, and that’s why I’ve got to resign.

In a letter to the prime minister, Hancock wrote;
The last thing I would want is for my private life to distract attention from the single-minded focus that is leading us out of this crisis.
We owe it to the people who have sacrificed so much in this pandemic to be honest when we have let them down as I have done by breaching the guidance.
Hancock apologised to his family and said he needed to be with “his three children at this time.”
