Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has on Wednesday announced fixed dates to conduct the governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, made this known in Abuja during a meeting Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).
He expressed that that the election in Ekiti will hold on June 18, 2022, while that of Osun will hold on July 16, 2022.
In addition, he announced that the Commission has created additional polling units, most of which were formerly being used as voting points.
Yakubu converted a total of 56,872 voting points and voting point settlements into polling units, making it a total of 176,846 polling units.
The move comes as part of preparations for the 2023 general elections which is less than two years away.
He further stated that INEC has removed 749 polling units from inappropriate facilities, adding that the commission removed nine weeks polling units from shrines and several others from religious houses, royal palaces, and private properties.
Yakubu, however, did not give reasons for the action.
