As the world begins to heal from the effect of COVID-19 pandemic, BET Awards on Sunday, June 27 returned to a live format after over a year.
Hollywood actress, Taraji P. Henson hosted the network’s 21st ceremony and television broadcast which featured the theme “Year of the Black Woman.”
Last year, the BET Awards was one of the first major awards shows to take place after the start of the pandemic, though it took place virtually and remotely.
This year, the BET Awards returned to the live show format and welcomed back an in-person, vaccinated audience along with a red carpet at Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles.
Also, awards were handed out at a live, in-person show that felt like a return to pre-pandemic norms.
Organizers said they would work closely with Los Angeles County to support community vaccination efforts and ensure adherence to COVID-19 protocols.
During the show, Megan Thee Stallion dominated, taking home the awards for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist; Video of the Year and Best Collaboration for “WAP,” her duet with Cardi B; and a Viewer’s Choice Award for “Savage (Remix),” her 2020 track with Beyoncé.
Also, Queen Latifah was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Before she took the stage to give her acceptance speech, Monie Love, Rapsody, MC Lyte and Lil’ Kim performed a tribute to Latifah, including her own hit “U.N.I.T.Y,” as the rapper-actress got emotional while watching from the audience.
Latifah brought her own father onstage, along with a photo of her mother, who died in 2018.
In addition, Swizz Beatz oversaw a tribute to the late rapper DMX, who died in April at age 50. Busta Rhymes, Method Man and Griselda performed during the tribute, which followed the “In Memoriam” segment remembering those who died over the past year. Their medley included a rousing performance of “Party Up (Up in Here).”

Megan Thee Stallion and DaBaby led the night’s nominations with seven each but she walked away as the night’s big winner with four awards, while DaBaby was shut out.
Late Chadwick Boseman was named best actor, while Judas and the Black Messiah was named best movie, but neither award was handed out during the telecast.
Other highlights included Cardi B revealing her second pregnancy during a set with her husband, Migos member Offset, and Lil Nas X kissing his male dancer at the end of a fiery, Egyptian-themed, Michael Jackson-referencing performance of his No. 1 hit “Montero (Call Me by Your Name).”
